A few bits of advice.

  • Make sure you can explain what your company does in an interesting, relevant way to someone who only asked out of politeness
  • Know what your dream client looks like - if you don't, how can you find them?
  • Know your company's brand values before you commission the designers
  • Don't be afraid to let people know why your company is special
  • Naive questions yield results
  • The best way to change someone else's behaviour is to change your own
  • Something paid for always has more perceived value than something you get for free
  • Never drop the price, increase the value
  • Don't let the technical people write the website (it will be accurate, legal and keep the regulators happy but no else will read it)
  • If your budget is tight, focus on getting your content perfect and keep your output simple
  • Make sure you know what success looks like before your invest in any marketing activities
  • Advertising in newspapers and magazines is really only worth doing if you can afford to do it regularly and really well. If you can't afford to do it right, invest in other types of marketing instead
  • Make what you are selling relevant to your customer - it's about them, not you
  • Always go for practical over pretty
  • Don't make it hard for people to buy things
